Why Some People Get Offers And Others Don’t
It’s not what you think it is
INSIDE THIS ISSUE:
This week’s hot & vetted remote roles
What actually determines the decision
The thing nobody talks about
What separates the yes from the no
Hi Freedom Seeker,
I’ve seen two people interview for the same job. Similar experience. Similar backgrounds. Similar interview performance.
One gets an offer. One gets rejected.
And it’s rarely because one person was more qualified. Usually it’s something else. Something subtle that most people don’t even realize is happening.
The thing is... once you see it, you can’t unsee it. And it changes how you approach interviews completely.

WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERS
It’s not how polished you are. The person who seemed more perfect sometimes loses to the person who seemed more real.
It’s not how much you know about the company. I’ve watched someone who did zero research get hired over someone who knew everything.
It’s not even how well you answered the questions. Sometimes the person who fumbled through an answer but seemed genuinely interested wins.
Here’s what I actually see determine the offer: Whether the hiring manager feels like you actually want the job.
Not whether you’re qualified. Not whether you’re smart. But whether they believe you’re genuinely interested in doing this specific work at this specific company.
HOW THIS SHOWS UP
When you talk about the job, do you sound like you actually thought about it? Or like you’re just trying to get hired?
When they ask why you’re interested, can you give a real answer? Or do you give the generic “your company seems innovative” thing?
When you talk about your experience, does it connect to what they actually need? Or does it feel like you’re listing credentials?
When they ask questions, do you seem curious about the answers? Or are you just waiting for your turn to talk?
It’s subtle. But it’s the difference between seeming like you want this job and seeming like you want any job.
THE THING NOBODY REALIZES
Companies can find qualified people. There are lots of qualified people. What’s harder to find is someone who actually cares about the specific work.
So when it comes down to two similar candidates, they pick the one who seems genuinely interested.
And that’s not something you can fake. Not really. People feel whether you actually give a shit or you’re just going through the motions.
WHAT THIS MEANS
You don’t need to be perfect. You don’t need to know everything. You don’t need to have the exact experience they’re asking for.
But you do need to actually want the job. And you need to show that in how you talk about it.
If you’re applying to jobs you don’t really care about... that shows. Companies feel it. And they move on.
If you’re applying to jobs you actually want... that also shows. And it makes you stand out.
THE HARD PART
You can’t fake genuine interest. So if you’re interviewing and you don’t actually want the job... they’ll know.
Which means you have to be selective about what you apply to. You have to actually care about some of these jobs. Not all of them. But some.
And that’s harder than just applying to everything and hoping something sticks.
