Why Most Job Search Advice Fails (Including Some Of Mine)

The stuff that sounds good but doesn't actually work

INSIDE THIS ISSUE:

  • This week’s hot & vetted remote roles

  • Why conventional wisdom backfires

  • What actually matters

Hi Freedom Seeker,

I've watched enough job searches to know what works and what doesn't.

And honestly? A lot of the advice people follow is killing their chances. Not because it's terrible advice. But because it's generic. One-size-fits-all. Doesn't account for the actual reality of how remote hiring works.

I used to give that same advice too. "Apply to more jobs." "Perfect your resume." "Network harder."

Then I watched someone do all of it perfectly and still get nothing. And I realized I was missing something.

Turns out most job search advice fails because people either don't understand how to actually apply it or they take it way too far.

WHAT DOESN'T WORK

The "just keep applying" thing. People think volume solves everything. But applying to 50 bad jobs is worse than applying to 5 good ones. You get burnt out. Your applications get generic. Nothing changes.

The "perfect your resume" advice. Yeah, a good resume matters. But I've seen perfect resumes get ignored and mediocre ones land interviews. Because perfect doesn't mean compelling. It just means... perfect.

The "network your way in" thing. People treat networking like it's some magic bullet. But most cold networking goes nowhere. Real connections matter. But you can't force those.

The "study common interview questions" approach. People memorize answers and then freeze when the actual interview is different. Because they're reciting, not talking.

WHAT I GOT WRONG

I told people to customize every application. Which sounds right but it actually paralyzed them. They'd spend three hours on one job and then be too tired to apply to anything else.

I said "always follow up." But most follow-ups are just noise. They don't change anything.

I suggested people need to research the company deeply before applying. Which is overkill. You need basic info. Not their entire history.

I told people rejection is just part of the process and don't take it personally. True. But also... that advice doesn't actually help when you're getting rejected. It just sounds hollow.

WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERS

Being selective about which jobs you apply to. Real thought. Not just clicking everything that says "remote."

Having a resume that shows results, not just tasks. One clear achievement per job. That's it. Not pages of fluff.

Following up once. Professional. Brief. Then moving on. Not multiple check-ins.

Applying consistently but not obsessively. Five to ten good applications a week beats fifty mediocre ones.

Accepting that some things are outside your control and stopping the spiral of worry about them.

THE HARD PART

Most job search advice is... easy to say. Harder to actually do right. And people usually mess it up by taking it too far.

The advice isn't wrong. But the way people execute it usually is.

And I didn't realize that until I'd been watching people actually do these things for a while.

WANT ADVICE THAT'S ACTUALLY BASED ON WHAT WORKS?

The 1:1 Job Search Partnership isn't built on generic tips. It's built on watching what actually separates people who land jobs from people who stay stuck.

We skip the stuff that doesn't work and focus on what actually moves the needle.

Here's what we do:
✅ Cut through the noise of bad advice
✅ Focus on what actually works
✅ Build strategy based on real patterns
✅ Help you land something without burning out

Reply with "YES" and let's skip the stuff that doesn't work.

Until next week,
Sami

P.S. If you're following generic job search advice and it's not working... that's not a reflection on you. It's a reflection on the advice. The people landing jobs aren't doing it the way everyone says to. They're doing something different. And I can show you what that is.
