THE SUNK COST TRAP

You've already invested time. You've interviewed twice. You've prepared materials. You've had conversations with the hiring manager.

So when things get weird or slow down, you keep going. Because you don't want to waste what you've already done.

But that's exactly backward. The time you already spent is gone either way. The question is just whether you want to waste more time on top of it.

And most people do. Because they've already invested so much, walking away feels like giving up.

WHEN IT'S TIME TO WALK

The timeline keeps changing. They said "you'll hear from us by Friday." It's now the following Wednesday. Then they say "by next week." Then "soon."

This usually means they're disorganized or they're still deciding between you and someone else. Either way, you're in limbo and you can't control it.

The process is getting weird. They're asking for strange things. Lots of free work. Excessive testing. Red flags that signal this company's kind of a mess.

You're losing interest. You were excited at first but now you're kind of dreading talking to them. That feeling is real. That's your gut telling you something's off.

The job description keeps changing. They interview you for one thing, then pivot to asking about something totally different. They don't know what they actually need.

They're lowballing or backtracking on important stuff. The salary conversation gets vague. Remote setup that was promised is now "flexible." Things that mattered to you are disappearing.

Nobody's responding. You follow up and hear nothing for days. Nobody returns emails. That's not how serious hiring works.

THE HARD PART

Walking away feels like failure. Like you're giving up on an opportunity.

But you're not giving up. You're just stopping. There's a difference.

You're redirecting your energy to opportunities that are actually moving. Companies that are organized. People who actually want to hire you and are moving at a reasonable pace.

Here's the thing: If a company is gonna hire you, they'll make it happen. They'll move reasonably fast. They'll communicate. They'll show genuine interest.

If they're dragging things out or being weird about it? They're either not that interested or they're chaotic. And you don't want to work there anyway.

WHAT WALKING AWAY LOOKS LIKE

You don't need a big dramatic exit. You just... stop.

If they reach out again, you can respond. But you're not chasing them. Not following up. Not checking in to see where they're at.

You tell them something like "I really appreciate the opportunity, but I've decided to move forward with another role." That's it. Professional. Done.

Then you actually move forward. You apply to other stuff. You have other interviews. You build your pipeline so one weird process doesn't matter.

THE REALITY

Job searching takes time. But not infinite time on one opportunity.

If you're three weeks into an interview process and nothing's moving, something's wrong. Either they're not serious or they're disorganized. Either way, that's information.

Use it. Walk away. Find companies that move faster and want you more clearly.
