THE FORMAT DEBATES THAT DON'T MATTER
CHRONOLOGICAL VS. FUNCTIONAL
Everyone tells you "never use functional format." The truth? It depends.
Chronological (listing jobs in order) works for 90% of people. Use it unless you have a specific reason not to.
Functional (organizing by skills) only makes sense if you're making a major career change or have significant gaps you're trying to downplay.
But honestly? Hiring managers can usually tell when you're using functional to hide something. So it doesn't work as well as people think anyway.
Just use chronological and stop overthinking it.
ONE PAGE VS. TWO PAGES
The "resume must be one page" rule is outdated.
If you have 10+ years of experience, two pages is fine. If you're early career, keep it to one.
The real rule: Don't waste space. If you're stretching to fill two pages, cut it down. If you're cramming everything into tiny font to fit one page, use two.
Make it as long as it needs to be to show relevant experience. That's it.
SERIF VS. SANS-SERIF FONTS
Nobody cares. Use a readable font (Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman, Georgia) and move on.
The only font rule that matters: Don't use anything weird or decorative. Keep it professional and readable.
PDF VS. WORD DOC
PDF is usually safer because formatting stays consistent. Word docs can look different depending on the version someone opens them in.
But some ATS systems prefer Word docs. If the application specifically asks for .docx, send that. Otherwise, PDF is fine.
This matters way less than you think.
WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERS
CONTENT QUALITY
Is your experience clearly described? Are your achievements specific and quantified? Does it match the job you're applying to?
This is 80% of whether your resume works. Format is maybe 10%.
SCANNABILITY
Can someone find important information quickly? Clear section headers, consistent formatting, bullet points instead of paragraphs - these help.
Dense walls of text kill readability no matter what format you use.
RELEVANCE
Does your resume show you can do the job they're hiring for? That's what matters.
Perfect format with irrelevant experience still gets rejected.
ATS COMPATIBILITY
Simple, clean formatting works best. No text boxes, no tables, no graphics. Standard section headers like "Work Experience" and "Education."
This matters more than whether you use one column or two.
WHERE PEOPLE WASTE TIME
