THE MISTAKES I SEE EVERY WEEK

MISTAKE #1: TREATING YOUR RESUME LIKE A JOB DESCRIPTION

People list every single task they were responsible for. "Managed email campaigns. Coordinated with vendors. Updated spreadsheets. Attended meetings."

Cool. But what did you actually accomplish?

Hiring managers don't care what you were supposed to do. They care what you delivered.

"Managed email campaigns" tells me nothing. "Rebuilt our email sequence and increased click rates from 2% to 8%" tells me you can actually do the job.

MISTAKE #2: APPLYING TO EVERYTHING

I get it. You're desperate. But applying to 30 completely different roles in one week just makes you look unfocused.

Project manager one day. Customer support the next. Marketing coordinator after that.

Pick a lane. Get good at positioning yourself for that specific type of role. Then expand once you're getting interviews.

Scattered applications = scattered results.

MISTAKE #3: THE GENERIC COVER LETTER (OR NO COVER LETTER)

Either people skip the cover letter entirely, or they write the exact same one for every job:

"I am writing to express my strong interest in the [Job Title] position..."

Hiring managers can smell a template from a mile away.

If you're going to write a cover letter, make it about them. What's the company dealing with? What problem could you solve? Why do you actually care about this specific role?

If you can't answer that, don't apply.

MISTAKE #4: IGNORING THE OBVIOUS GAPS

Employment gap? Address it briefly. Career change? Explain why it makes sense. Lack of direct experience? Show what transfers.

People try to hide these things and hope nobody notices. They always notice.

The ones who get hired are the ones who face it head-on and frame it in a way that actually makes sense.

MISTAKE #5: RESUME SAYS OFFICE, LINKEDIN SAYS REMOTE

Your resume talks about "in-office collaboration" and "onsite team meetings." Your LinkedIn headline says "Remote Professional."

Which is it?

If you want remote work, everything needs to say remote. Your resume, your LinkedIn, your cover letter. All of it should scream "I know how to work remotely and I'm good at it."

MISTAKE #6: WAITING TOO LONG TO GET HELP

This is the biggest one.

People spend 3-6 months doing the same thing, getting the same results (or lack of results), and hoping something will magically change.

It won't.

If you've been applying for 2+ months with barely any responses, something is broken. Your resume, your targeting, your positioning - something isn't working.

And the longer you wait to fix it, the longer you stay stuck.
