How To Spot Fake Remote Job Postings Before You Apply
The roles that say remote but really are not
INSIDE THIS ISSUE:
This week’s vetted remote roles
The common “remote” traps
How to tell what is actually remote
How to stop wasting time on bad listings
Hi Freedom Seeker,
A lot of “remote” jobs are not actually remote.
They look fine at first glance. You apply. Maybe even get a response.
Then somewhere in the process it turns into:
“We prefer candidates in X city”
“Occasional office visits required”
“Remote for now but may change”
Now you have wasted time on something you never would have considered.
Here is how to catch that early.

WHAT “FAKE REMOTE” ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE
👉 LOCATION HIDDEN IN THE FINE PRINT
The title says remote.
The description says “must be based in” or “within commuting distance.”
That is not remote. That is local with flexibility.
👉 REMOTE BUT ONLY FOR NOW
You will see lines like:
“Currently remote”
“Remote during transition”
That usually means they expect you in office later.
👉 REGION LOCKED ROLES
“Remote in US only” or “Remote in EU only”
This one is not fake, but it matters. If you are outside that region, you are wasting your time.
👉 TOO VAGUE ABOUT SETUP
If they do not clearly explain how the team works remotely, that is a sign it is not a remote first company.
Real remote teams are specific about communication, time zones, and expectations.
WHY THIS MATTERS
1️⃣ YOU ARE LOSING TIME
Every application takes effort. Doing that for roles that were never a fit slows everything down.
2️⃣ YOU GET PULLED INTO THE WRONG PROCESS
You get on a call and only then find out it is hybrid or location based.
Now you are starting over.
HOW TO FILTER FASTER
👉 Scan for location requirements before anything else.
👉 Look for clear statements like “fully remote” or “distributed team.”
👉 Check if current employees are actually remote.
👉 If it is unclear, assume it is not fully remote and move on.
THE REALITY
There are plenty of real remote jobs.
But you have to filter harder than you think.
Otherwise you end up applying to roles that were never an option to begin with.
WANT ME TO FILTER THESE FOR YOU?
This is exactly what I do in my remote job partnership.
I do not send you random listings.
I filter for roles that are actually remote and actually fit your level and preferences.
Then I help you through the process. Positioning, interview prep, all of it.
Less time wasted. Better chances of landing something real.
Reply with "REMOTE" and I will send you how it works.
Until next week,
Sami
PS: If you keep applying to “remote” roles without checking any of this, you are going to keep wasting hours on jobs you were never going to take anyway. Up to you if you want to keep doing that or just let me filter it properly.
